A record number of California teachers could see pink slips in their mailboxes over the next two weeks as school districts prepare for the worst possible budget scenario. The notices, required by state law to be sent out by March 15, will advise the teachers, mostly those with the least seniority, that they might not have a job next year. The layoffs must be confirmed in mid-May.
The layoff process is unnerving and demoralizing to schools and communities. The school districts are expecting budget cuts due to the poor state of the economy but won’t know the extent of the cuts until later in the year.
Whilst many teachers in Australia face uncertainty as they are on contracts, the issuing of an unknown number of ‘pink slips’ to tenured staff is an added layer of stress. The impact on staff morale is huge!
